The History of SOL - It didn't refer to Detroit and was originally a compliment when used for the Detroit Lions
While the Detroit Lions were the kings of the NFL jungle throughout the 1950s, another Lions team to the north was having a rough go of their first decade in existence. The BC Lions, a CFL team based out of Vancouver, started up in 1954 and had a rough go of it at first. In their first nine seasons, the British Columbia version of the Lions had only one winning season, including campaigns of 1-15, 3-13, and 1-13-2. Naturally, the Vancouver newspapers around this time had something to say as the losing seasons piled up. It was “same old lions”, and it wasn’t particularly kind.
At the same time that the Canadian ‘Same Old Lions’ were doing most of their losing, Puscas began reporting on a perennial winner in Detroit. Around the early 1960s, ‘Same Old Lions’ was generally used as a compliment if it was referring to Detroit.
For instance, it signaled respect and impending doom when the Baltimore Sun reported that the Colts had to face the ‘Same Old Lions’ in a 1961 game.
“There is nothing new about the Lions…the outfit is called the greatest defensive bunch in the National Football League.” –Cameron Snyder, September 21, 1961
Hey all! So last week, I posted a poll to each NFL Subreddit looking to primarily answer one question: Which NFL teams are the most/least united in their hatred for a single enemy? To my surprise, I received almost 20,000 responses! 19,660 to be exact. However, there were 4 team subreddits that didn't allow me to post on their team subreddit, and because of that I did not have sufficient data for those teams. Those teams were:
- Browns (Mods didn't respond)
- Bucs (Mods said polls aren't allowed)
- Eagles (Mods said it would be allowed in offseason, not in regular season)
- Jaguars (Mods never responded)
Some polls were banned by automod but later reinstated, and it seems like the poll got a bit less traction because of it in some of those subreddits. I should have just reposted the poll, but didn't realize until I was collecting data at the end. I say this not to make anyone upset at any particular moderator group, but just to qualify the data I'm presenting because it does not include sufficient data from every fan base, and there are some that have enough responses (100+ was the benchmark I set before posting the poll) but should have gotten more if not for my own ineptitude. The teams with the highest number of responses are:
Green Bay Packers: 2,968 Responses
San Francisco 49ers: 1,280 Responses
Seattle Seahawks: 1,056 Responses
Carolina Panthers: 1,003 Responses
New York Jets: 1,001 Reponses
Maybe these are the most active communities? Maybe these communities just upvoted and commented on my post more than others? Whatever the reason, these communities had the most responses, and communities with more responses might influence the overall numbers a bit more.
Without further ado, here are some of my findings:
New England Patriots: 12.9%
Dallas Cowboys: 9.7%
Green Bay Packers: 8.3%
Minnesota Vikings: 7.7%
Philadephia Eagles: 5.9%
The Patriots and Cowboys at the top surprises absolutely no one. The Vikings are probably not actually this hated, but the Packers most-hated team is bound to crack the top 5 given that they had over double the responses of the second most responsive team. This is worth looking at, but the following chart is the most interesting piece of data imo.

Some interesting notes:
The Packers, Raiders and Patriots both appeared 3 times as the "most hated team" of another team, but all 3 of the Packers' appearances make the top 10 including the number 1 spot. So the Packers have clearly done quite the number on the NFC North, but I'm sure is surprises no one that no one hates anyone else as much as the Bears hate the Packers. [Note: Saints would almost certainly be tied as well if the Bucs responded and Cowboys would likely be in 1st at 3.5 if the Eagles responded]
The 15 teams that are not the most hated team for any other NFL team are: Arizona Cardinals, Baltimore Ravens, Buffalo Bills, Carolina Panthers, Cincinnati Bengals, Denver Broncos, Detroit Lions, Houston Texans, Jacksonville Jaguars, Los Angeles Chargers, Miami Dolphins, New York Giants, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Tennessee Titans and Washington Commanders.
The 5 teams that didn't even make it in to anyone's top 3 are: the Houston Texans, the Detroit Lions, the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Carolina Panthers and the Washington Commanders. Well, the Commanders made it into their own top 3 but I won't count that for this statistic. Sorry it seems like everyone forgot about you.
The most self-loathing team by votes was: the Arizona Cardinals. They received 6.5% of their own votes.
The New York Giants were the only team to have a tie for first place. They clearly hate the Cowboys and Eagles both very much, but couldn't seem to decide which one they hated more with both teams receiving exactly 274 votes. It's impressive that they made it to 17th place even with that.
The Miami Dolphins were the most evenly split among the top 3, with their 3rd most hated team still receiving 28.6% of votes.
The Indianapolis Colts and the Houston Texans are the only 2 teams to hate a team outside of their division the most unanimously, voting for the Patriots and Cowboys respectively. The Texans hating the Cowboys makes sense as an in-state rivalry, but I was surprised by the Colts vote; I'm sure someone can explain in the comments.
I personally voted for the San Francisco Forty Whiners. I hope your team misses the playoffs for the next 100 seasons after this one but I'm annoyed that you guys will probably continue to alternate between making deep playoff runs and choking at the end or with all of your players being injured and getting a high draft pick in the process.
I also asked what everyone's second favorite NFL team was, but those numbers aren't nearly as interesting. There doesn't seem to be a particularly strong correlation between first and second favorite team, but the top 3 results are:
0. None. I only root for my own team. (38.9%)
Buffalo Bills (10.6%)
Detroit Lions (4.0%)
Cincinnati Bengals (3.7%)
Feel free to ask questions in the comments and I'll do my best to answer! Thanks for everyone who answered and I hope you all found this as interesting as i did.
